NOVEMBER CLASSES & SPECIALS

The month of November blows in with cold winds, daylight savings time, and more time for knitting, spinning and crochet!  Here at Sip 'n Knit we're looking forward to a fun new class to take us through the month.  Our specials for November are a 10% discount on any yellow, orange or brown yarn and 20% off our Spiced Chai beverages.

Double Knitting
Team Hat (of your choice)
Monday evenings November 12, 19 and 26 from 6 – 8pm

Double knitting is a technique that allows you to create a tube on straight needles; a double tube on circular needles; "quilt" your knitting or make a reversible fabric.  Double knitting can come in very handy when you would like to create a thick fabric:  a cold-weather hat, a pot holder, a coat.  It is also a great technique when doing color work with 2 colors:  double knitting will allow you to do vertical stripes and any other kind of two-tone fabric without requiring multiple bobbins of yarn, stranding or similar techniques required for 2-color work when working in standard knitting.

In the opening session of the class we will explore several ways to do double knitting and the many uses for the technique.  The next two sessions will leave you free to work on one of the three patterns provided or one of your own choosing as you perfect your double knitting skills.  Instructor Pam Feldpausch will lead us down the path of Double Knitting fun!  Cost $15.00

SPIN-A-LONG SATURDAY
Saturday, November 17 10 am - 2 pm
Bring your spinning wheel or drop spindle for a relaxing day of fiber with friends.  Don't spin?  Come and visit any way!

MAY ~ AUGUST 2012

During the spring and summer months we are not planning any special courses, but we will do classes my appointment – if you need more details please see or contact Suzanne at the yarn shop 989-449-4444.

We’ll continue with TWELVE HATS IN 2012, with cables on both a knit and a crochet pattern. This is a knitter’s choice. We also have sock patterns to choice from that features cables. These are on display and when you make your choice from one of those, you will receive a discount. Please check with Suzanne for more details if you have any questions.

Cost is $5.00 a month and you will also receive 10% off supplies for this project.  Magazine with the pattern is available at the shop now.

OPEN KNIT is every Monday evening from 6-8pm and Wednesday Morning from 10-12am.  There is a $5.00 fee to participate per month, but this includes either sessions and entitles you to a 10% discount on all your supplies for the monthly project.

MARCH 2012

Happy St. Patrick’s Day ~ Happy First Day of Spring ~ Daylight Savings Time for us to spring ahead to some new projects!

I don’t know about you but St. Patrick’s Day always makes us think of cables, so cables will be our theme this month. We’ll continue with TWELVE HATS IN 2012 with cables. We’ve done several cabled sock patterns in the past and it’s so hard to choose just one, so we’re going to make it “knitter’s choice” – we’ll have our sock patterns that feature cables on display and when you make your choice from one of those, you’ll save 10% as the March Special in the yarn shop. Our other special for March is 10% off Brown Sheep Lambs Pride yarn. Please check with Suzanne for more details if you have any questions.

Our spinning days remain popular and we've had requests for a "learn to drop spindle class", so here you are! This month we have a special guest instructor who will bring knowledge, fiber and the spindle to the shop to teach this lovely craft. Its a wonderful way to start in the world of spinning, especially if you aren't ready to invest in a spinning wheel. And its portable, you can take your spindle with you just like you can your knitting! Read more below and make plans to join us.

FEBRUARY 2012

Happy Valentines Day ~ Happy First Day of Spring ~ Happy Presidents Day ~ Happy Groundhog Day ~ Happy St. Patrick’s Day! There are lots of fun celebration days coming up in the next two months and as winter goes by and spring begins, how about joining us for a new project?

We think we have chosen some small but fun things that won’t stretch the dollar to far but still challenge us a little. Knit, crochet, spin along with us! Below is an outline of upcoming events – if you need more details please contact Suzanne at the yarn shop 989-449-4444.

To start things off, HOW ABOUT HATS? Let’s do TWELVE IN 2012! If you’re a member of the online community Ravelry, you might have read about lots of group attempting to do twelve of something this year – 12 sweaters, 12 pairs of socks or mittens, 12 granny squares, spin 12 pounds of fiber – you get the idea. For us, the idea came a little bit late, so we’ve missed January, but beginning in February we are going to have a kal each month for hats. Like socks, hats are a small project that gives you the opportunity to learn a new technique, try a new yarn or knit a simple old favorite without breaking the bank. If you don’t need a hat for yourself or anyone you know, we’re always looking for donations to our hat charity. The goal will be to knit or crochet twelve over the year, but if that’s stretching things to much, don’t fret it and still plan to join in when you can. We’ll kick things off on Wednesday morning February 1 and Monday evening, February 6. This will be a relaxed, not many rules kal (or crochet along). If you have any questions, please check with Suzanne at the yarn shop, 989-449-4444.

SPECIALS OF THE MONTH ~ 10% off all single patterns; 15% off if you are an Open Knit member

OPEN KNIT is every Monday evening from 6-8pm and Wednesday Morning from 10-12am
There is a $5.00 fee to participate per month, but this includes either sessions and entitles you to a 10% discount on all your supplies for the monthly project.

HOW ABOUT HATS Wednesday, February 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 10 am till noon and/or
Monday February 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 6 to 8 pm.
Chose your favorite hat pattern if you have one! We’d like to hear about both knit and crochet and if you have an example of a finished hat, please bring it to share. If you don’t already have a favorite, we’ll have some pattern suggestions on hand - for example, the latest issue of Interweave’s Knitscene magazine has at least four different hat patterns and the winter issue of KnitSimple has seven! Both of these publications are available at the yarn shop). If you do bring a favorite hat to show us, please remember to respect the copyright of any pattern you may have used and do not share unless the pattern writer allows it!

BEGIN KNITTING A HAT Monday, February 6 & 13 from 6-8 pm or
Saturday, February 11 from 10am till 2 pm

Cost to participate is $5 for the month, which entitles you to 10% off yarn for the project. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a learn to knit class but rather a knit-a-long where we chose a pattern and yarn to work on together, but there are always knitters who are willing to help out if you have problems with a pattern - we can work through it together!

A Year to Sit and Slip (Stitches)!

One Monday evening last fall, we were discussing various knitting techniques we would be interested in learning or re-learning. The conversation went from cabling to intarsia and everything in between. Somewhere in the midst of the conversation an idea was born. Similar to our 2010 journey through EZ patterning, how about devoting 2011 to exploring one area of knitting? It sounded like a good idea to a few of us so Pam Feldpausch took on the task of exploring our possibilities and came back with 12 different slip stitch patterns to introduce us to.

Slip-stitch knitting is a family of knitting techniques that use slip stitches to make multiple fabrics simultaneously, to make extra-long stitches, and/or to carry over colors from an earlier row. The neat thing about it is that you can make complicated looking multiple color patterns without having to carry the other yarn colors in the back like you do with intarsia.

Starting in January, we will cover one slip stitch pattern a month. The list of patterns we will be covering are as follows:

January 3, 2011 – Lattice Stitch
February 7, 2011 - Fretwork
March 7, 2011 – 3 and 1 Stitch
April 4, 2011 – Sand Stitch
May 2, 2011 – Zebra Stitch
June 6, 2011 – Dots and Dashes
July 11, 2011 – Sanquar Stitch
August 1, 2011 – Ladders Stitch
September 12, 2011 – Star Stitch
October 3, 2011 – Linked Stitch
November 7, 2011 – Harlequin Stitch
December 5, 2011 – Staircase Stitch

For only $10, you will receive instructions for all 12 slip stitch patterns as well as directions for turning the 12 slip stitch patterns into either an afghan or a scarf. Pam will also provide assistance with each of the patterns on the dates listed above.

So how about adding ‘Expand My Knitting Skills’ to that list of resolutions you make every year and then plan on joining us at Sip N Knit where we will help you mark it off you list! There is a beautiful example of each of the stitches on display at Sip 'n Knit. Feel free to join in at any time!

SEPTEMBER

A YEAR OF KNITTING EZ ~ Chapter 9, Nether Garments
Monday September 13, 20 & 27; 6 – 8 PM
Have you ever thought about knitting your own classic set of warm winter long-underwear?!? How about a pair in red? In sizes from child to adult…why not give it a try and keep the cold Michigan winters at bay!

MONDAY NIGHT SIP ‘N KNITTERS (Another choice if you are not participating in the EZ KAL)
Alpen Socken is September’s Sip ‘n Sock pattern,

Monday September 13, 20 & 27; 6-8 PM

It’s been a while since we have done a Monday night Sip ‘n Sock together, so lets start the fall out right with a great new pattern, Judy Alexander’s Alpen Socken, from the Fall 2010 Interweave Knits (you must have a copy of the magazine for the pattern. If you don’t already have one, they are available at the shop) This sock features intricate lattice twisted stitch motifs, a picot hem and heel designs. A firmly plied sock yarn in solid color will give you the best stitch definition (how about the Cascade Sock yarn?) You will need approximately 430 yards of yarn and a set of size 1 double pointed needles, along with a cable needle and stitch marker. Sample of the knitted sock should be in the shop by the first of September.

HATS GALORE NEEDS YOU!Monday, September 20; 6-8 PM
We need you, knitters and crocheters, as we expand our charity project to include both hats to scarves in 2010. There is a great need for each of these items. Remember, we have a trunk full of donated yarn especially for charity that needs to be used and if you need help getting started, instruction will be provided free of charge. For all of our participants we offer free coffee and a 10% discount on supplies purchased that day.

OCTOBER

A YEAR OF KNITTING EZ ~ Chapter 10, Open-Collared Pullover

October 4, 11, 18 & 25; 6-8 pm
Chapter Ten in our knit-a-long/book club features an Open-Collared Pullover sweater, similar in style to a golf or polo shirt, with short sleeves

MONDAY NIGHT SIP ‘N KNITTERS (Another choice if you are not participating in the EZ KAL)
The Proverbial Cap by Meg Swansen

Monday October 4, 11, 18 & 25; 6 - 8 pm
Not a sock this month, but a hat, and this one designed by Elizabeth Zimmermann’s daughter, Meg. Great as a Christmas gift, a treat for yourself, or how about as a donation to our Hats Galore box? This hat is a sampler study in twisted stitch knitting, including a twisted rib, twisted cables, double helix-like motifs and elaborate lattice braids. Not exactly for the faint of heart, but a good exercise to stretch your knitting muscles! The pattern is available in the Fall 2010 Interweave Knits magazine (the same one last month’s sock was in!) and again requires a firmly knit wool yarn – Cascade 220 or Plymouth Galway are good options – about 210 yards worth. One pair of 24-inch circular needles or a 16-inch circular and a set of double pointed needles to achieve a gauge of 23 sts to 4 inches (about a size 4)

Monday November 1, 8 , 15, 22, 29; 6 – 8 pm
Our final look at twisted knit stitches, this one with an unusual floral motif for a lovely pair of warm winter mittens. Requires approximately 225 yards of worsted weight yarn, a set of size 3 double pointed needles (or size to reach gauge of 25 sts and 34 rnds per 4 inches); stitch markers and a cable needle.

Sip-N-Knit Class Policies
Class fee is due with registration and many classes have limited space available, so be sure to sign up early. You are encouraged to purchase your supplies at Sip-N-Knit prior to beginning your class. Class supplies purchased in the store will be given a 10% discount. Occasionally, a class may call for additional supplies provided by the instructor, so please read each class description carefully or if you have any questions, contact the shop at 989-449-4444 or email sipnknit@yahoo.com. If you cancel, class fee will be refunded as long as the store is notified at least 3 days prior to class starting date. In the case of bad weather or sickness you must notify before class time and reschedule a make up time.

Special classes can be scheduled for private groups or to accommodate all work schedules. Please contact Suzanne at Sip-N-Knit (989-449-4444).

Don’t forget, we do alterations!

MORE MAY MITTENS

Don't forget knitting tonight at Sip 'N Knit...come in and cool off with a refreshing drink and knit in comfort!

Here are another pair of Mitered Mittens, these knit by Nellie:
They are bulky and soft and warm! Nellie incorporated the I-Cord tie on the back of the hand, and the contrasting trim and thumb really make a great look!

Why not stop in and start your own pair of mittens?

EZ ~ MAY IS FOR MITTENS

Are you ready for May? Are you ready to make mittens? Come out and join us for Mondays in May with Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitters Almanac Mittens ~ the simple Mitered Mitten or the more challenging Norwegian Mitten.

(Norwegian Mittens in progress above)

Plymouth Yarn Boku is an excellent choice for the Mitered Mitts, as is Cascade 220 (especially the heathery colors). Choose traditional solids or a blend of solid and variegated for your Norwegian Mitts. Use your imagination and we hope to see you at knitting!
