SIP 'N SOCKS: Monday January 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 6 to 8 pm.

Our first Sip ‘n Sock of 2012 is a repeat from the past! We've had a request to knit an old favorite, the SIP ‘n SOCK COFFEE CUP pattern.

This is a simple sock, worked in worsted weight yarn. There is a small amount of colorwork but very easy to do. You will need a main color of yarn plus a small amount of contrasting color (you will probably want a pretty high contrast color so that your "coffee cup" will show up in the sock) If you have a copy of the pattern from before, just bring it along with you. If you need a copy, they will be available at the yarn shop.

Cost to participate is $5 for the month (covered by your “open knit” fee), which entitles you to 10% off yarn for the project. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a learn to knit class but rather a knit-a-long where we chose a pattern and yarn to work on together, but there are always knitters who are willing to help out if you have problems with a pattern - we can work through it together!

SIP ‘N KNIT SPIN-IN, Saturday, January 14, 10 am till 2 pm

Bring wheels, spindles and fibers and come in for the first of the new year spin-in!. If you don’t spin, bring your knitting or crocheting or simply come to visit. There is no cost to participate.

Sip-N-Knit Class Policies
Class fee is due with registration and many classes have limited space available, so be sure to sign up early. You are encouraged to purchase your supplies at Sip-N-Knit prior to beginning your class. Class supplies purchased in the store will be given a 10% discount. Occasionally, a class may call for additional supplies provided by the instructor, so please read each class description carefully or if you have any questions, contact the shop at 989-449-4444 or email sipnknit@yahoo.com. If you cancel, class fee will be refunded as long as the store is notified at least 3 days prior to class starting date. In the case of bad weather or sickness you must notify before class time and reschedule a make up time.

JULY ~ AUGUST

Vacation Time! The shop will be closing at 2 pm the week of July 18 through July 22. There will be no Monday night knitting on July 18.

We will continue our rug class (see photo above) with Maggie Fellows - it’s not to late to join us! You will need to order your yarn from the shop and the cost of the class is $10 plus supplies. This class will be repeated later in the year.

SIP & SLIP AFGHAN, PATTERN TECHNIQUES and STITCHES: Monday evenings in July, 6-8 pm
It has been so much fun watching the slip stitch pattern squares unfold! Seeing the color choices everyone has made and seeing the projects develop. The pattern for July will be “Sanquar Check”. If you haven’t already joined us for this yearlong knitting journey, it’s never too late! Contact Suzanne at the shop for more information and to obtain your pattern.

We’ll put socks aside and work on the “Drops Bolero” short sleeve sweater in seed stitch with cute crochet borders. This is a knit-a-long and will be included in the $5.00 monthly fee. We do ask that you purchase your yarn at the shop and any special orders need to be made by July 18. Pattern is free online. You can see a finished sample of this project in the yarn shop. Please Note: This is not a learn to knit class but rather a knit along where we chose a pattern and yarn to work on together, lending support as needed.

Crochet Rug. June 13, 20 & 27 from 6-8pm
We will be working on a Crochet Rug taught by Maggie Fellows. For this class you will need to special order you yarn. There will be a wide selection of colors to choose from. This is a 3-week class that will introduce newcomers to crochet. You will learn the basic stitches of chain, single crochet, and double crochet. With a little homework, you should be able to complete a scarf by the end of the three sessions. Class size limited to 8. Cost: $25 plus supplies.

If you can do a crochet chain, you can make this fun and unique jewelry! Colorful, lightweight and easy to make…check out samples at the shop and then sign up for this class. You will need a size “H” crochet hook and a twelve inch ruler, yarn is included in the cost of the class. Instructor: Nancy Gilbert. Cost: $5

When you finish making your necklace (see class description above) come join us as we spin a yarn…If you are already a spinner, bring your wheels or spindles and some yummy fiber to show off and spin with friends. Show off what you have been working on over the winter. If you are just dreaming of becoming a spinner, come and watch and ask questions ~ maybe give a wheel a spin! There is no cost to participate and as always, a variety of food and beverages are available to purchase in house from The Mayors Office. There will be a lunch special of the day, so plan to keep yourself nourished while you spin the day away!

UNFINISHED OBJECTS, Saturday, March 19, 10 am to 2 pm
Most of us have our fair share of UFO’s…unfinished objects! Here’s a chance to come and sit in a nice workspace and sip a great beverage while you work on freeing up some needle space (finishing your project)! Bring your work to the shop and work on taming those UFO’s. There is plenty of yarn and supplies on hand to finish your current project and then start a new one!

APRIL CLASS SCHEDULE

A Year to Sit and Slip (Stitches)!

One Monday evening last fall, we were discussing various knitting techniques we would be interested in learning or re-learning. The conversation went from cabling to intarsia and everything in between. Somewhere in the midst of the conversation an idea was born. Similar to our 2010 journey through EZ patterning, how about devoting 2011 to exploring one area of knitting? It sounded like a good idea to a few of us so Pam Feldpausch took on the task of exploring our possibilities and came back with 12 different slip stitch patterns to introduce us to.

Slip-stitch knitting is a family of knitting techniques that use slip stitches to make multiple fabrics simultaneously, to make extra-long stitches, and/or to carry over colors from an earlier row. The neat thing about it is that you can make complicated looking multiple color patterns without having to carry the other yarn colors in the back like you do with intarsia.

Starting in January, we will cover one slip stitch pattern a month. The list of patterns we will be covering are as follows:

January 3, 2011 – Lattice Stitch
February 7, 2011 - Fretwork
March 7, 2011 – 3 and 1 Stitch
April 4, 2011 – Sand Stitch
May 2, 2011 – Zebra Stitch
June 6, 2011 – Dots and Dashes
July 11, 2011 – Sanquar Stitch
August 1, 2011 – Ladders Stitch
September 12, 2011 – Star Stitch
October 3, 2011 – Linked Stitch
November 7, 2011 – Harlequin Stitch
December 5, 2011 – Staircase Stitch

For only $10, you will receive instructions for all 12 slip stitch patterns as well as directions for turning the 12 slip stitch patterns into either an afghan or a scarf. Pam will also provide assistance with each of the patterns on the dates listed above.

So how about adding ‘Expand My Knitting Skills’ to that list of resolutions you make every year and then plan on joining us at Sip N Knit where we will help you mark it off you list! There is a beautiful example of each of the stitches on display at Sip 'n Knit. Feel free to join in at any time!

January Sip-n-Sock pattern is not really a sock at all, but a slipper. Chrissy Gardiner’s Pavo Slipper Socks from Winter 2010 Interweave Knits features toe-up construction and a simple cable. It is sized for both children and adults and is a quick knit. The suggested yarn for the adult size from the magazine is Plymouth Yarns Galway Worsted and the yarn shop has a good selection of colors. You will need to have a copy of the magazine for the pattern.

Our resident star knitter Pam Feldpausch will take us on a knitting journey with some fun slip stitches, patterns and techniques. Lattice Stitch will kick us off! See details at the beginning of this post.

Back To School ~ Fall Sweaters ~ Winter Woolens ~ A yarn lovers favorite time of year!

Listed below are some of our planned fall into winter projects - classes, knit-a-longs and ongoing events for September through December. Don’t forget to mark your calender if there is anything you are interested in and can plan to join us. We are already making plans for our fourth annual Christmas/New Year’s Pajama Party and the Grand Finale celebration of our Year of Knitting EZ…look for more details as the time draws near.

Beginning September 11, we will be open again on Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm.

This fall for our Monday night Sip ‘n Knitters, we are going to take on three patterns from the Fall 2010 Interweave Knits magazine and explore twisted stitch knitting with Judy Alexander’s Alpen Socken; Meg Swansen’s Proverbial Cap and again Judy Alexander with the Bavarian Tulip Mittens. The magazine is availalble at the yarn shop…join us if you can!

SEPTEMBER

A YEAR OF KNITTING EZ ~ Chapter 9, Nether Garments Monday September 13, 20 & 27; 6 – 8 PM
Have you ever thought about knitting your own classic set of warm winter long-underwear?!? How about a pair in red? In sizes from child to adult…why not give it a try and keep the cold Michigan winters at bay!

MONDAY NIGHT SIP ‘N KNITTERS (Another choice if you are not participating in the EZ KAL)
Alpen Socken is September’s Sip ‘n Sock pattern,
Monday September 13, 20 & 27; 6-8 PM

It’s been a while since we have done a Monday night Sip ‘n Sock together, so lets start the fall out right with a great new pattern, Judy Alexander’s Alpen Socken, from the Fall 2010 Interweave Knits (you must have a copy of the magazine for the pattern. If you don’t already have one, they are available at the shop) This sock features intricate lattice twisted stitch motifs, a picot hem and heel designs. A firmly plied sock yarn in solid color will give you the best stitch definition (how about the Cascade Sock yarn?) You will need approximately 430 yards of yarn and a set of size 1 double pointed needles, along with a cable needle and stitch marker. Sample of the knitted sock should be in the shop by the first of September.

HATS GALORE NEEDS YOU!Monday, September 20; 6-8 PM
We need you, knitters and crocheters, as we expand our charity project to include both hats to scarves in 2010. There is a great need for each of these items. Remember, we have a trunk full of donated yarn especially for charity that needs to be used and if you need help getting started, instruction will be provided free of charge. For all of our participants we offer free coffee and a 10% discount on supplies purchased that day.

OCTOBER

Chapter Ten in our knit-a-long/book club features an Open-Collared Pullover sweater, similar in style to a golf or polo shirt, with short sleeves

MONDAY NIGHT SIP ‘N KNITTERS (Another choice if you are not participating in the EZ KAL)
The Proverbial Cap by Meg Swansen
Monday October 4, 11, 18 & 25; 6 - 8 pm
Not a sock this month, but a hat, and this one designed by Elizabeth Zimmermann’s daughter, Meg. Great as a Christmas gift, a treat for yourself, or how about as a donation to our Hats Galore box? This hat is a sampler study in twisted stitch knitting, including a twisted rib, twisted cables, double helix-like motifs and elaborate lattice braids. Not exactly for the faint of heart, but a good exercise to stretch your knitting muscles! The pattern is available in the Fall 2010 Interweave Knits magazine (the same one last month’s sock was in!) and again requires a firmly knit wool yarn – Cascade 220 or Plymouth Galway are good options – about 210 yards worth. One pair of 24-inch circular needles or a 16-inch circular and a set of double pointed needles to achieve a gauge of 23 sts to 4 inches (about a size 4)

Monday November 1, 8 , 15, 22, 29; 6 – 8 pm
Our final look at twisted knit stitches, this one with an unusual floral motif for a lovely pair of warm winter mittens. Requires approximately 225 yards of worsted weight yarn, a set of size 3 double pointed needles (or size to reach gauge of 25 sts and 34 rnds per 4 inches); stitch markers and a cable needle.

ONGOING EVENTS:

GROCERY BAG WEDNESDAY
Bring in a bag of non-perishable groceries on the third Wednesday of each month and receive the daily special at the Mayor’s Office on us! All items are donated to the local food pantry. One bag of groceries equals one lunch. This community project is ongoing.

BASIC SOCK CLASS: Call to set up a time.
Learn to knit a basic sock form the cuff down in three two-hour sessions.
Class requirements include basic knowledge of knitting (cast on; knit and purl; increase and decrease). Experience knitting in the round is helpful but not necessary. There will homework for this class. Cost of two-week class is $20 plus supplies. Class size is limited to 4 students. Instructor: Suzanne Bailey. If three weeks is needed it will be an extra $5.00.

KNITTING 101: Call to set up a time

GROCERY BAG WEDNESDAY
Bring in a bag of non-perishable groceries on the third Wednesday of each month and receive the daily special at the Mayor’s Office on us! All items are donated to the local food pantry. One bag of groceries equals one lunch. This community project is ongoing.

BASIC SOCK CLASS: Call to set up a time.
Learn to knit a basic sock form the cuff down in three two-hour sessions.
Class requirements include basic knowledge of knitting (cast on; knit and purl; increase and decrease). Experience knitting in the round is helpful but not necessary. There will homework for this class. Cost of two-week class is $20 plus supplies. Class size is limited to 4 students. Instructor: Suzanne Bailey. If three weeks is needed it will be an extra $5.00.

KNITTING 101: Call to set up a time
You will learn how to knit, purl, cast on and off, by making a basic scarf or dish cloth. Cost: $25 plus supplies. Class size limited to 8. Instructor: Suzanne Bailey

EZ ~ WEEK TWELVE

EZ ~ WEEK ELEVEN

We hope you can join us this Monday night, March 22, as we continue on our journey with Elizabeth Zimmermann! Is anyone knitting from the March chapter? I began a pair of mittens, using Cascade 220 yarn and my usual number of stitches - did not do a gauge swatch because I knit a lot of mittens, knit a lot with Cascade 220 and always use the same size needles and number of stitches....WRONG! I didn't take into account the colorwork, and my mittens are to small, reminding me again of the importance of a gauge swatch (something I usually do). These would fit a child or woman with very slender hands! I'm also not that happy with my color choice, so I finished the first mitten off as a fingerless mitt and cast on for the second, even though I have lost my interest in it. The photo at the top of this post is an in-progress picture, I will bring the actual items to knitting tonight.

I don't believe there was anyone else knitting baby things, but super knitters Pam and Nellie are moving right along on their January Fishtrap Aran sweaters! Both are using Cascade 220 wool yarn. A YEAR OF KNITTING EZ ~ Chapter 2, Some Babies Things

Chapter Two in our knit-a-long/book club includes directions for the well known February Baby Sweater and several other items. Even if you do not have a baby in your immediate family or circle of friends, why not consider knitting a baby item to donate to our charity knitting project? If you are not planning to knit, but are reading along with our book club, come prepared to discuss Chapter Two. Mary Kaufman had the answer to the January question for Chapter One and will have her name entered an extra time into our prize drawing!

Pam and Nellie brought along show and tell to finish out the month of January, these completed Fishtrap Aran swatchcaps:

This is a mix and grab blend of yarns in all weights and lengths…if you did not spin up some yarn for this, check your knitting stash to find some odds and ends that will work. You must have a copy of the Winter 2009 Spin-Off magazine for the hat pattern if you are planning to knit that.

Tonight is the last Monday night of January for our Year Of Knitting EZ - Knitters Almanac project~ hope to see you at the yarn shop whether this will be your first night or your third! We had a lively, fun group last Monday night.

Next week we will begin the February installment with some baby things. I have the sample Two Needle Baby Sweater nearly complete, just a few inches to go.

Some of you may chose to start a February project while some will be continuing with January's Aran projects. At least one of us is going to be doing a full cardigan (hurray, Nellie!) If you don't want to do the February projects or continue with January, feel free to jump ahead to March ;) Or just join us to read along.

EZ ~ Week Two

It's Week #2 of our January Almanac project and we hope you will be able to join us for some EZ style knitting at the yarn shop tonight! We had a fun kick-off last Monday, despite some wintry Michigan weather. We all had a good laugh over watching Elizabeth knitting on the back of a motorcycle in the promo for Knitting Without a License on the Knitting Around DVD and I think it is safe to say we were all inspired by she and Meg!

Is anyone knitting felted slippers? I have all of the supplies, but have been so immersed with my Zimmermann projects that I have not cast on for anything else!

Bring any of your projects and have some good knitting (or crochet) time from 6-8 pm at the Yarn Shop. See you there!

All of us at Sip ‘n Knit want to wish all of you a very happy new year, and to say “thank you” for your friendship and your patronage this year past. We are looking forward to some fun new projects to start us out for 2010, as well as some continuing favorites and worthwhile events. We are especially proud of our charity activities Hats Galore and Grocery Bag Wednesday. As always, we are happy to hear your suggestions and ideas for classes and workshops. In 1910, Elizabeth Zimmermann was born… In August of 2010, she will surely be remembered and celebrated by her family and friends on the anniversary of what would have been her 100th birthday. Those in the knitting world will also celebrate her “The Godmother of Knitting” as she has been called. To pay tribute to “EZ” and her joy and legacy of knitting, we would like to offer a challenge to you…join us at Sip ‘n Knit for a year long knit-a-long of Elizabeth Zimmermann projects! Mrs. Zimmermann very kindly arranged an entire year of patterns and knitting discoveries into a knitters diary of sorts, a handy little book called the “Knitters Almanac”. Many of us already have this treasure in our personal library, but if you do not, Sip ‘n Knit will have copies available for purchase. Even if you never knit a single item from the Almanac, this book is a treasure to own and read and all for a cost that is less than many single patterns these days. How can you not love a book whose dedication reads “To the Unsure Knitter, To the Blind Follower, and To all those who do not yet know that they can design their own knitting, this book is encouragingly dedicated”…EZ

If you do not know of Elizabeth Zimmermann just do a Google search of her name, or if you are a member of Ravelry type in her name in both the “Pattern” and “Groups” search box…you will be astounded at the results! Also be sure to check out the website of the company she founded, now run by her equally amazing daughter Meg Swansen, at Schoolhouse Press.

Here’s how it works….part KAL, part Book Club we will kick off on Monday, January 11th from 6 – 8 PM with an EZ Party. Please come out and join us even if you are not planning to participate in the Almanac KAL to share the fun, you might just change your mind and decide to join in after all!. We are hoping to view one of Elizabeth’s DVD’s of knitting instruction and look through a variety of her books and patterns. (If anyone has any of her patterns, books, DVD’s or especially if you have any items you have already knit of hers, please bring them along for show and tell. That could also include items by Meg Swansen or other Schoolhouse Press patterns and newsletters) NOTE: In order to participate in the KAL, you must have a copy of Knitters Almanac (No sharing, for copyright reasons of course! If you do not already own one, please let Suzanne know by January 4th and she can order one for you). Then chose which, if any, of the patterns you would like to knit and come join us on Monday nights throughout the year as we work our way through till the end, knitting and reading. You may decide to knit just one, or every other one or even every single item as they come up (though most of us can not complete an entire sweater in just one month, except maybe Pam or Margaret - LOL!) We will try to help each other along following Elizabeth’s bare bones (she calls them “pithy”) instructions for each item. You will either be a knitter who finds her methods liberating and exhilarating or frustrating and lacking ;) If you are not knitting, how about participating in the Book Club part of our event, reading a chapter each month and discussing it together on the first Monday? There may even be prizes involved for discussion participation on certain months! We may also decide we want to throw in an special Saturday knitting day occasionally. Details will be posted each month on the blog, so be sure to check regularly or contact the yarn shop with any questions you might have.

Felted Clogs or Slippers, January 4, 11, 18 & 25; 6-8 pm
There are many styles and sizes of these popular patterns available to us, and Sip n’ Knit has most of them in stock, either for crochet or knit. Maybe you have made them before but need a new pair or maybe these will be your first attempt, what better project for a cold winter Michigan Monday than felted footwear? We have lots of colors of great felting wool, including Cascade 220, Plymouth Galway and Brown Sheep Lambspride for you to chose from and plenty of help on hand if you should need it to get you started. Cost is the usual $5 per month fee for Monday nights.

SPINNING AND SAMPLING EXOTICS & LUXURY FIBERS
Saturday, January 9th; 10 am – 2 pm
Calling all spinners…how about a little fun and excitement with exotic and luxury fibers? Things like angora, mohair, camel, pygora, silk, angelina, firestar and even alpaca and llama…lets dust off the spinning wheels and spindles and get together to play with some of these fibers. With most of them, a little goes a very long way and many of us have some in our stash that we just aren’t sure what to do with. If you do not have stash, some will be provided for you…in other words, there will be fiber available for you to sample! If you have extra, please bring it along to share with others. Then, in February, we will get together to work on a project from these sample yarns!

A YEAR OF KNITTING EZ ~ Chapter 1, Aran Sweater

This is a 3-week class that will introduce newcomers to crochet. You will learn the basic stitches of chain, single crochet, and double crochet. HATS GALORE NEEDS YOU!

We need you, knitters and crocheters, as we expand our charity project to include both hats to scarves in 2010. There is a great need for each of these items. Remember, we have a trunk full of donated yarn especially for charity that needs to be used and if you need help getting started, instruction will be provided free of charge. For all of our participants we offer free coffee and a 10% discount on supplies purchased that day. And don’t forget our Hat’s Galore luncheon specials!

Remember those little luxury fibers we spun up in January? Well, here is your chance to use them in this neat little beret type hat featured in the Winter 2009 issue of Spin-Off magazine. This is a mix and grab blend of yarns in all weights and lengths…if you did not spin up some yarn for this, check your knitting stash to find some odds and ends that will work. Do you crochet rather than knit? We will find a suitable pattern for you to use for your yarns, too! You must have a copy of the Winter 2009 Spin-Off magazine for the hat pattern if you are planning to knit that.

It’s time to welcome fall and back to school time with back to knitting and crochet here at Sip ‘n Knit! You’ll find several new class offerings and knit-a-longs; some old favorites and some changes and updates to our past favorites. One of those that we are most excited about is the popular Knitting For Charity ~ want to know more?!? Well, read on!

WANTED: Knitters & Crocheters for HAT’S GALORE!
WHEN: Third Saturday of each month from 10am till 2pm
WHAT: This is our Knitting for Charity Program ~ we make hats and headbands to donate to various charities within the state of Michigan. Upcoming Recipients include:
University of Michigan Children’s Oncology Unit; Michigan State Oncology Unit; Alma Hospital Oncology Unit; Local Clothing distribution agencies; Carson City Hospital; Local Baby Pantries; Local Community Mental Health Agencies; Alma Psychiatric Unit

The first Hat’s Galore meeting for fall will be on Saturday, September 19 th from 10 am till 2 pm ~ this will also be the first of our brand new program “NEW-BEE” SATURDAY'S. Have you wanted knit or crochet items for those in need? Can’t do either? Join us at Sip ‘N Knit on New-Bee Saturday where we will have an instructor available to show you the basics and get you started on a simple hat or headband for charity. There is no charge for this instruction, however we ask that for this free class you purchase your supplies from our Shop. You will need one skein of Plymouth Encore yarn; one set of size 10 knitting needles or a size G & H crochet hook. As an added bonus for the day, there will be a special of 10% off supplies used for making the charity hats, free coffee and ice tea. We also have a lunch special for that day, so plan to eat and keep yourself nourished while you work away! If you already know how to knit or crochet, please come join in anyway to help us make some hats or cheer on your favorite knitter/crocheter! Sip ‘N Knit Small Projects Night: Monday evenings from 6 – 8 pm . Cost is $5.00 for the month (even if you don’t participate in the project). Intro To Ravelry: Monday, September 14 from 6:30 – 8 pm Do you "Ravel"? What is Ravelry? From the Ravelry site: "Ravelry is a place for knitters, crocheters, designers, spinners, and dyers to keep track of their yarn, tools, and pattern information, and look to others for ideas and inspiration....." I admit, I was one of those who resisted signing on for quite some time, but whether you join this online knitting community for fun or for information, it really is a useful tool for the fiber/yarn enthusiast. It doesn't cost a thing to become a member - go to www.ravelry.com and sign in with a username and password...that's it! It is very simple to use, but there are a few tips that will make your time there more enjoyable and more useful.

Join us at Sip 'n Knit on Monday, September 14 at 6:30 pm for a little "INTRO TO RAVELRY". We will try to show you some of the special features (things you might not have thought of before!) and answer your questions about using this wonderful program to its best advantage. COST: No charge except your monthly Monday night group fee ($5) Feel free to bring along your laptop!

Knitting 102: Mondays, October 5, 12, & 19 from 6-8 pm. You have learned the basic stitches to knit and purl, now what? We have selected a felted purse or very warm felted slippers for you to continue practicing your knitting skills. This class is geared toward those who have already taken Knitting 101 or those that are interested in learning to knit something other than a basic scarf or dishcloth. COST: $25 plus supplies. Class size limited to 8. Instructor: Suzanne Bailey

Crochet 102: Mondays, October 5, 12, & 19 from 6-8 pm. In this class we will be working on a poncho or a project of your choice. You will learn more crochet stitches and how to read a simple pattern. This is a good class to take after Crochet 101. COST: $25.00 plus supplies. Instructor: Kirsten Mitchell

Basic Socks Class: Call to set up a time for individual class or for you and a friend, if you prefer company! Learn to knit a basic sock form the cuff down in three two-hour sessions. Class requirements include basic knowledge of knitting (cast on; knit and purl; increase and decrease). Experience knitting in the round is helpful but not necessary. There will homework for this class. Cost of two-week class is $20 plus supplies. Class size is limited to 4 students. Instructor: Suzanne Bailey NOTE: If three weeks is needed, there will be an additional fee of $5.00.

The Great American Afghan Project: Every fourth Monday from 6-8 pm beginning September 28, 2009We began this project in March 2009, but you can join in at anytime. This an ongoing, two year project that includes 25 unique squares using a variety of knitting techniques – a great way to learn on a small scale! You can see many of the squares displayed in the shop. You may choose to sign up for any number of sessions and receive a discount for signing up for four classes at a time. You need to be able to knit, purl and bind off.

Just a reminder of a neat class coming up this Monday, July 27th, from 6 to 8 pm, CABLE ON V-NECKS with Pam Felpaush as our instructor. Here is a photo of the sample vest that Pam knit up to show the technique (shamelessly stolen from Pam's blog!)

The cost will be $5.00 if you are a paid member of the Sip 'N Scarf group...if not, the class fee is $10. Pam says you will need to bring some yarn and needles appropriate to the yarn. This looks like a fun class!

Middle of the Mitten Fibers Arts Meeting: Saturday May 9 from 10-2:30. This will be the last fiber meeting at the yarn shop until fall, however for the first time we are going to continue with some other events throughout the summer, beginning this month. Keep Saturday, May 16th open for a fun visit to the farm - the alpaca farm! We are planning to spend the day at North Star Alpacas. Owner Maple Smith has invited us to come and start our day by meeting the alpacas, then sharing a lunch and spending some time doing the fibery things we love. Drum carders, hand cards and wool combs will be available for some fiber blending time if anyone is interested. In June, we will travel to Serenity Farms and meet the Corriedale sheep. A workshop "Learning To Drop Spindle" is being planned at Serenity Farms as well as plenty of time to visit the baby lambs and fondle the wool! July will take us to the Kaufmans farm where we will see Shetland sheep and take in Mary's beautiful gardens. In August, Hilda Oakes historic Michigan farm will be our host. April Showers bring new goodies to the yarn shop and fun projects and classes to start your spring off right!

First of all, we are happy to announce that they're finally here ~ the new Addi-Clicks! The knitting world is raving about these long awaited sets of Addi-Turbo interchangeable needles and many shops have a waiting list to get them. We only have a few left, so if you are interested hurry in to check them out.

Also new on the shelves, a fresh shipment of the very popular Plymouth Sockin' Sox sock yarn (photo left above) in all available colors. A great buy for sock yarn and a wonderful hand to the yarn of superwash wool, bamboo and nylon, skeins flew out the door last month! Come in and check out the colors, chose a few for your spring sock and scarf projects. Just in as well, an assortment of Regia colors, including Regia Cotton Color (photo below) just in time for warmer weather and the scrumptious Regia Silk (photo right above)! The Great American Afghan; Monday April 27 6-8 pm ~ Square 18
Every Fourth Monday Evening from 6-8 (this will be a two year, on-going project). We began in March, but you can join in at any time and sign up for any number of sessions, but you will receive a discount for signing up for at least four classes. You must already know how to knit, purl and bind off. We encourage material to be purchases at Sip-N-Knit - if they are not, class fees will be slightly higher. Having become a little weary of choosing sock patterns every month for the past two years, we thought you might like to take a break along with us and work on something different for awhile. We have chosen scarves. Scarves are such wonderfully versatile, portable and useful projects! Depending on the size, pattern and yarn used they can take us from fall, winter and into late spring. They are a great way to experiment with new stitch patterns and techniques, and a wonderful excuse to use that special yarn you have been waiting to try! Beginning in March, each month we will work together on a scarf project - your choice of a knit or crochet pattern. As with the Sip ‘n Socks projects, cost to participate is $5 for the month, which entitles you to 10% off your scarf knitting supplies. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a learn to knit class but rather a knit along where we chose a pattern and yarn to work on together, lending support as needed.

Our knit pattern for March is a companion knit to the Middle of the Mitten Fiber Arts project of the month, the Morning Surf Scarf by Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer of Heartstrings Fiber Arts. It is a free pattern and is available at this link. Please note that the pattern is not available at the yarn shop - it is a free online pattern but you must print out your own and bring it with you to the knit-a-long.

There was a feature article on this project and gallery of scarves in the Summer 2008 issue of “Spin Off” magazine, or if you are a member of Ravelry you can check it out here There are over 500 different versions shown on Ravelry! We will be devoting a day to the pattern and the spinning of yarn for it at our March Middle Of The Mitten Fiber Arts Meeting on Saturday, March 7 (see details below), but even if you are not planning to spin your own yarn, please feel free to come and join us for the “kick off” and to cheer each other on!

Please Note that this months meeting is on the FIRST Saturday of the month rather than the second.
EVENT: Morning Surf Scarves - Spinning and Knitting
This is the scarf that was featured on the cover of the Summer 2008 issue of “Spin Off” magazine, accompanied by a photo gallery of variations of the scarf and pattern notes. It is a wonderful project to stretch your use of spinning and knitting in color or texture, as it makes use of an easy to do drop stitch, undulating pattern. If you have some wildly colored dyed fiber in your stash that you aren’t quite sure what to do with….or maybe it is beautiful and subtle and you want to make something really special….or maybe you have some luxury fiber that you want to stretch as far as you can in a project…grab that fiber and bring it along to spin for the scarf! If you don’t have anything that suits you in your fiber stash, this would be the perfect excuse for shopping ;) You will probably need at least 3 ounces of fiber, depending on how thick you are planning to spin. The pattern accommodates a wide range of colors, textures and thickness! We should have some samples for you to see the day of the meeting. Come with your spinning wheel or spindle and plan to spin in the morning and ply in the afternoon. If we have time, we can begin working on the actual pattern. SUPPLIES: Spinning wheel or drop spindle and fiber if you are planning to spin for the project; yarn if you are planning to knit and not spin (don’t forget, there is PLENTY of yarn available for purchase at the yarn shop!); needles appropriate your yarn. You need to bring your own copy of the pattern, which can be found at this link (it is free, but it is not available for distribution at the yarn shop – you must download and print it yourself, for your own personal use) COST: There is no cost for this spin-in day…come and have fun!

If you are not working on this project, still feel free to come and hang out at the yarn shop and enjoy some knitting, crochet, spinning or visiting time – there is plenty of room to do that! Using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s timeless and perennially surprising pattern, we’ll learn the tricks to successfully knitting this one-piece baby sweater (see sample in photo above). Once you have learned to make this nifty little pattern, you may wish to make the Adult Version for yourself or someone you know! With Cary Smith as your workshop leader, you will learn: Double increases and double decreases, casting off in purl; I-cord techniques and (hopefully) some confidence about reading your knitting! You must know how to cast on (preferably long tail cast on) and knit.

Materials: For the infant size, 350 yards of dk or light worsted weight yarn. For the toddler size, about 400 yards of worsted or DK weight Needle: 32″ or 40″ circular in size appropriate for yarn choice to reach gauge. KNITTING THE BALTIC BRAID Saturday, January 17 from 10 am till 2:30 pm
The knitted or "Baltic" braid is an embellishment that looks like you have braided some yarn and glued or stitched it along the surface of your knitting. It can be done with a single color, or two colors. Starting with a couple of colors of yarn from your stash (any weight but preferably the same weight) we will learn how to do a Baltic Braid. Then we will try our hand at a hat that incorporates the Baltic Braid into the pattern. The hat is sized for Mother, Daughter and doll so pick the lucky recipient and let's learn to braid. Cost: $20.00. Instructor: Pam Feldpaush

THRUMMED MITTENS REVISITED Monday, January 19 & 26 from 6-8 pm OR Saturday February 14 from 10 am till 2:30 pm
You have probably seen these before, maybe you have even made a pair already, but would you like to learn the best way to make these extra luxurious, warm and fluffy, fleece lined mittens? You will learn tips and tricks for making these the best mittens ever – like putting your hands inside soft pillows! Great for gifts or to keep for yourself. You will discover what fibers work the best to line your mittens, how to prepare that fiber for knitting and how to care for your mittens once they are finished. We will work from a basic mitten pattern, but you will be given a couple of options for cuffs, thumbs and finishing. NOTE: You must already know how to knit and purl. Materials Needed: about 250 yards of DK or light worsted yarn for the mitten (handspun is great for this project!); about 2 ounces of a wool that will stick to itself after you’ve incorporated it into your mittens (top, roving or locks of wool, but not super wash). Merino, Corriedale, fine BFL, or anything that is soft (a fine to medium fine wool) is ideal. After some wearing, the roving will felt together and make your fingers happy! Needles: Size 3 or 4 straight needles. If you don’t have your own, roving and wool locks can be purchased at the yarn shop, along with yarn of course! Here are the particulars:

Have you always admired beautiful, functional and popular braided wool rugs? Would you like to design and create one for yourself or as a gift, perhaps something that will become a treasured heirloom? This class is for you! Students will prepare wool roving (processed sheep wool) into a braid in the morning, then the afternoon will be spent making your wool "braids" into a nice chair pad. You will need to bring about one pound of roving in 2-3 shades or colors, or if you do not have roving it will be available at the class. COST: $40 plus $10 equipment fee (additional roving is extra). Letty's book, "The Shepherd's Rug, will also be available to purchase (and to have Letty sign!), though you do not need to have the book to take the class.

This class is not just for those who raise sheep or have wool on hand to make the rug...all you need is the desire and ambition to create one of these lovely, functional works of art for the home. And not just rugs....hot pads, chair pads - use your imagination! Letty is a fun, encouraging and wonderful instructor - you will have a great time in this all day class! ENTRELAC BASICS: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15 FROM 10-2:30 (1/2 HOUR FOR LUNCH). Entrelac is described as a geometric woven basket weave popular in the Scandinavia countries. Learn this basic technic and have fun expanding your knitting skills. You will need 1 or 2 skeins of boku yarn or 2 skeins of contrasting colores. Size 8 or 9- 13 or 18 inch circular needles available at the shop. Cost is $25. Instructor: Lucy Bromm

CROSS STITCH SCARF: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH 10 am -2:30 pm (1/2 hour break for lunch)
Learn to make a basic knitting stitch pattern and turn it into a scarf! This simple two-row pattern repeat will tweak your interest in expanding your horizons. It finally feels like we have turned the corner from winter to spring and it couldn’t have arrived soon enough for most of us. We had a lot of fun with our classes and knit-a-longs this winter and we think we have some exciting new things scheduled for May and June to take you into summer. Remember, as you look over the scheduled classes, if you see a class you are interested in but the time doesn’t fit into your busy summer schedule we be happy to re-schedule it at a more convenient time.

Congratulations to Lucy Bromm, who was the winner of last months prize giveaway! Lucy won a shoulder wrap kit that she is planning to knit for one of her granddaughters.

We are very excited about our summer Knit-a-Long project, the Wrap Me Up Stole by Chris de Longpre of Knitting at Knoon designs beginning in June. Be sure to read more about this in our June class descriptions or stop by the shop to see a sample or the pattern.

Our summer shop hours begin the fourth week of May. Starting that Saturday (May 24) we will be closed on Saturdays during the summer so be sure to make a note on your calendars.

MITTENS IN MAY! Knitting guru Elizabeth Zimmerman makes the argument that it is better not to make mittens in a hurry. In her classic book "Knitter's Almanac" she suggests that we "take our time over them…venture into new approaches and designs…enjoy them....let's make them in May!" Following her lead, our Sip-n-Sock for May will not be a sock at all, but an adventure in knitting mittens!

If you have never made mittens before, they are actually very easy...my motto is that mittens are just socks with a thumb instead of a heel! If you have made mittens before, how about giving a new and more challenging project a try this month? If you don't have a pattern for mittens you would like to try, come into the yarn shop and browse some of the books or magazines to find something or look online at many of the free patterns available. Cost to participate is $5 for the month, which entitles you to 10% off the knit along supplies. SHIBORI SCARF CLASS: Monday; 6-8 pm; May 19 & 26 Learn a new technique for creating a beautiful felted fabric scarf using this Japanese felting technique that includes both wet and dry felting techniques. **NEW FOR JUNE!** The WRAP ME UP STOLE KNIT-A-LONG: Mondays, June 2, 9, 26, 23, & 30; 6-8 pm (this kal will continue through July and August)

This modular wrap is over-the-top in color and texture ~ as much fun to make as it is to wear! Knits up quick on size 8 needles with worsted weight main color yarn, a harmonizing secondary color and incorporating a few beads (optional). You will create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece with the selection of your own colors and style. This is a truly addictive pattern you knit from block to block, not wanting to stop till you see what comes next! Stop by the shop to see samples or take a look at the pattern.

COST to participate is $5 per month, which entitles you to 10% off the yarn for the knit along, plus $10 for the two-hour workshop (description of workshop below) that kicks off the project – a total of $25 (3 months at $5 per month and $10 for the workshop) plus supplies, for a summer long fun knit. The project requires a total of 1200 yards of worsted weight yarn, so if you are planning to purchase yarn from the shop you may want to come in during the month of May to make your selection and then be sure we have the quantity needed in your choice and colors (we will order more if needed) The sampler photo below (knit by Cary Smith of Serenity Farms) uses a combination of handspun yarn with Brown Sheep’s Lambs Pride:

This is NOT a difficult pattern, but it does require some techniques you may not be familiar with. Our plan is to “kick off” the knit-a-long on Monday, June 2nd with a two-hour workshop to provide you with some tips and guidance. You will learn how to knit a mitered square; tips for working paired decreases; picking up a new square from a previous one; hints for hiding yarn ends as you go and gain the confidence needed to create your own wonderful wrap! Cost for this workshop is $10 and even if you are just considering knitting the wrap, this class may help with your decision.

A WONDERFUL WALLABY KNIT-A-LONG at SIP 'N KNIT**
Monday evenings in February - February 4, 11, 18 & 25; 6-8 pm
Maybe you've seen them, maybe you've heard about them, maybe you don't have a clue what we are talking about... but you will definately fall in love with the Wallaby sweater from Cottage Creations.

This popular pattern has been in existence since 1984. With sizes from children's 2 to Adults "super size" it is seamless, knit in the round and featureing both a "pouch" and a hood (though the hood is optional)...think of a knitted "hoodie"!

All you need to join us in this Knit-A-Long are the Wonderful Wallaby pattern, an assortment of circular and dpn's in the appropriate size, and yarn required to accomplish the size pattern you want to make (all are available for purchase at Sip 'n Knit). You will also need the basic knowledge of knitting (this is not a "how-to" knit class, it is a project knit-a-long) There will be knitters who have made the Wallaby before on hand to help you should you encounter a problem and light refreshments are available through the coffee house. Cost to join us for knitting on Monday nights is a one time fee of $5 (per month)

Selecting and Spinning for Sock Yarn (including fiber preparation) with Cary Smith

Learn tips to help you chose and prepare a fiber; spin and condition a yarn that will hold up to sock-wear. Although geared towards sock yarn, this workshop will be informative to anyone wanting to learn more about making your spinning wheel work for you! COST: $5

LOCKER HOOKING RUG: Saturdays, February 2 & 16, 10am – 2pm
Create a piece of folk art. Locker hooking, using yarn, provides a fun and easy craft similar to traditional rug hooking, but with a twist. The locker hook uses the eye at the end of the needle to draw a string through all the loops you work. This “locks” them in place on the front of the canvas. The fact that the loops lock into place makes the rugs durable, and best of all washable. COST: $30 plus supplies. Class size limited to 10. INSTRUCTOR: Suzanne Bailey
